10/11/2025 – PTUK Play Therapist Caroline Briggs from Sussex Sunshine Play Therapy meets with her local MP, Rebecca Cooper

The Child Mental Health Charter Committee, sponsored by PTUK, would like to thank PTUK Play Therapist Caroline Briggs from Sussex Sunshine Play Therapy for the efforts she put into planning and preparing a meeting with her local MP, Rebecca Cooper in November 25.

Sarah Bentley chair of the CMHC supported Caroline and attended the online meeting with her. The meeting went superbly, and the MP has agreed to follow up on Caroline’s local issues and Sarah’s national ones, including hoping to ask a prepared question at Prime Ministers Questions, in the House of Commons.

A full report of Caroline’s presentation will be in a future edition of the  Play For Life magazine.

If you too would like to effect change locally and nationally, then please email Sarah Bentley chair of the Child Mental Health Charter, chair@childmentalhealthcharter.com supported by PTUK, who will support you every step of the way.

Parent shared  this with me.

My child came and spoke to me about how they were feeling, usually they would have a meltdown before we could find out what the issue was, thank you

Parent comment Nov 2025

I wanted to jump for joy

When working with a child who presents as a selective mute, I had to contain my joy when they shouted out a name in front of me in the school corridor and looked straight at me as they did so.  These actions are so powerful.

Parent's surprise

"I had always believed in therapy, but witnessing first hand the positive impact it is having on my child, I am so happy to see my child happy.  Thank you Caroline

Parents' Insights: Positive Transformations

One child I work with masked constantly and the parent was told that there are no issues, despite at home the client was   aggressive and the guilt afterwards — polite, compliant, always ‘fine.’ Not wanting anyone at school to see how she was at home for fear of judgement.  After a number of sessions, she was able to show school what she felt  and although this meant that the mask slipped it also meant that she could be herself, how powerful to be part of that.

Understanding Our Therapeutic Approaches

Supporting Children and Families Through Play Therapy

At Sussex Sunshine Play Therapy, I believe in the transformative power of play as a therapeutic tool. My methodology is rooted in the understanding that children communicate and express their emotions through play. By employing various play therapy techniques, I create a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their feelings and experiences. As a  therapists I utilise a range of strategies tailored to meet the individual needs of each child, fostering emotional healing and growth.

I incorporate a blend of guided play, creative arts, and structured activities that help children articulate their thoughts and feelings in ways that feel comfortable to them. Techniques such as role-playing, storytelling, and creative expression serve as gateways for children to reveal their inner world, enabling us to address issues like anxiety, trauma, and social challenges effectively. My approach is holistic, ensuring that I cater not only to the child but also engage with families, promoting a collaborative therapeutic experience

Furthermore, as a skilled counsellor I  maintain open lines of communication with parents and caregivers, equipping them with strategies to support their child’s emotional development at home. By fostering a partnerships with families, I enhance the therapeutic journey, ensuring continuity and reinforcing positive behaviours and coping mechanisms established in therapy.
