Play therapy services

At Sussex Sunshine Play Therapy, I can support children and young people aged 3 to 14, if you have a query about an older child please contact me.
My play therapy services are designed to support children as they navigate emotional, social, and developmental challenges in a way that feels natural and safe.

I work with children experiencing:

Anxiety or emotional distress

ADHD or concentration difficulties

Bereavement or loss

Family separation or changes in living arrangements

Low confidence, social struggles, or behavioural challenges

Every child is welcomed as an individual. I take time to understand their specific needs and circumstances, and I work closely with parents and carers to provide guidance and support throughout the therapeutic process.

Child Centred Therapy

Child-Centred Therapy is a form of counselling that places the child at the heart of the therapeutic process. Grounded in the principles of Carl Rogers’ Person-Centred Approach, this therapy creates a safe, supportive, and accepting environment in which children can freely express themselves without fear of judgment.

In this approach, the therapist does not direct the child or impose interpretations. Instead, they follow the child’s lead — respecting their pace, their interests, and their ways of communicating, whether through talk, play, art, or silence.

Child centred approach

What Makes It Child-Centred?

Rather than leading or instructing, the therapist follows the child’s lead. Every child is treated as an individual, and their feelings, thoughts, and experiences are met with warmth and understanding.

Key principles include:

Unconditional positive regard – the child is accepted without judgment

Empathy – the therapist works to understand the child’s inner world

Authenticity – the therapist is genuine, open, and emotionally present

How it helps

Through a trusting and consistent relationship, children can:

Explore difficult emotions safely

Build self-esteem and confidence

Develop healthier ways to cope and connect with others

Make sense of experiences such as anxiety, loss, or change

A Safe Space for Expression

Children often communicate their feelings through play, movement, or creativity rather than words. Our sessions are designed to meet them where they are, using age-appropriate materials that allow for freedom of expression.

Working Together

While the focus is on the child, we also value collaboration with parents and carers. We provide regular updates and support (within the bounds of confidentiality) to ensure the whole family feels informed and supported.
